7 Revision Myths That Waste Your Time (And What the Evidence Says)
Some of the most popular revision advice in Britain is wrong. Not slightly wrong — wrong in ways that quietly cost students grades. The trouble is that bad revision habits feel productive. You finish a session with a colourful set of notes, a tidy desk and a warm sense of achievement, then sit the exam and discover none of it stuck.
Below are the revision myths that come up most often with GCSE and A-Level students, why each one feels so convincing, and what the evidence actually supports instead.
Myth 1: "I'm a visual learner, so I only revise with diagrams"
The learning styles idea — that each of us is a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learner and should be taught accordingly — is one of the most widespread beliefs in education. It is also one of the least supported. Reviews of the research have repeatedly failed to find that matching teaching to a student's preferred style improves how much they actually learn.
What does matter is matching the method to the material, not to your personality. A diagram is the right tool for the structure of a heart or the layers of the atmosphere. A written paragraph is the right tool for an English Literature argument. A worked example is the right tool for a maths method.
Do this instead: ask "what does this content look like in the exam?" and revise in that format. If the question demands a six-mark explanation, practise writing six-mark explanations — not colouring in a mind map of them.
Myth 2: "Highlighting and re-reading is revision"
This is the single most common revision habit and one of the weakest. Re-reading creates what psychologists call the illusion of fluency: the text feels familiar, familiarity feels like knowledge, and you conclude you know it. Then the exam asks you to produce the information from a blank page and nothing arrives.
Highlighting has the same problem, with an added trap — deciding what to highlight is easy, so it requires almost no thinking. Low effort in, low retention out.
Do this instead: close the book and write down everything you can remember, then open it and check. This is active recall, and it is uncomfortable precisely because it works. The struggle to retrieve something is what strengthens the memory.
A quick test you can run on yourself
Read a page of notes. Shut them. Set a timer for three minutes and write everything you remember. If you can only produce a third of it, you have just found the gap between "feels learned" and "is learned" — and you have also just done a more useful revision session than the reading itself.
Myth 3: "Cramming the night before works for me"
Cramming does work — briefly. Information held in short-term memory will get you through a test the next morning and will be largely gone within days. That is fine if the exam is tomorrow and you have genuinely run out of runway. It is a disaster as a strategy across a two-year course with terminal exams.
Spacing the same total revision time across several shorter sessions produces substantially better long-term retention than one long block. The gap between sessions is not wasted time; the mild forgetting that happens in between is what makes the next retrieval effortful and therefore effective.
Do this instead: touch each subject little and often. Three thirty-minute sessions on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday beat one ninety-minute session on Sunday, even though the clock says they are identical.
Myth 4: "I need to finish my notes before I start testing myself"
Plenty of students spend the whole of Easter making beautiful notes and never reach the testing stage. Note-making is preparation for revision; it is not revision. If your folder is immaculate and your past-paper marks are unknown, you have organised your knowledge rather than built it.
Do this instead: start testing yourself from the first week, on whatever you have covered so far. You do not need complete notes to answer a question badly and learn from it.
Myth 5: "Background music and a bit of TikTok help me concentrate"
Music with lyrics competes for the same verbal processing you need for reading and writing. Notifications are worse — every glance at a phone imposes a switching cost, and the effect on the quality of your work is larger than most students believe.
Instrumental music at low volume is a reasonable compromise if silence makes you restless. A phone face-down in another room is not a punishment; it is the cheapest performance improvement available to you.
Myth 6: "Past papers are for the end, once I actually know it"
Saving past papers until you feel ready means you find out what the examiner wants at the point when it is too late to fix anything. Past papers are not just a test — they are a teaching tool. They show you how topics get combined, which command words recur, how marks are distributed, and where your understanding is thinner than you thought.
Do this instead: use them from early on, question by question if a full paper feels overwhelming, and always mark your own work against the mark scheme. The marking is where most of the learning happens.
Myth 7: "More hours means better results"
Hours logged is the easiest number to track and the least useful. Six hours of re-reading with the phone buzzing is worth less than ninety focused minutes of retrieval and past-paper practice. Long, unbroken sessions also degrade — attention drops, and the last hour is often the least productive of the day.
Do this instead: count what you produced, not how long you sat there. "I answered eight exam questions and corrected four of them" is a real measure. "I revised for five hours" is not.

Test yourself from memory rather than re-reading. Space those tests out over days and weeks. Mix topics rather than doing one subject to exhaustion. Use past papers early and mark them honestly against the mark scheme. Sleep properly, because consolidation happens overnight. None of it is glamorous, and all of it is more uncomfortable than highlighting — which is roughly the point.
