How to Revise From a Textbook (Without Just Highlighting It)

Most students are handed a textbook in Year 10 or Year 12 and never actually taught how to use one. So they do the obvious thing: they read a chapter, run a highlighter over the important-looking sentences, and close the book feeling like they have revised.

You haven't. You've read. Reading and revising are different activities, and the gap between them is where a lot of grades quietly disappear.

The good news is that a textbook is one of the most useful revision tools you own — it's comprehensive, it's written by people who know the specification, and it doesn't run out of battery. You just have to use it actively rather than passively. Here's how.

Why highlighting feels productive but usually isn't

Highlighting gives you two things: a sense of progress and a page that looks studied. What it doesn't give you is retrieval — the effortful act of pulling information out of your memory rather than putting it in.

Decades of research on the testing effect point the same way: trying to recall something strengthens your memory of it far more than re-reading it does. Highlighting is the opposite of retrieval. It keeps the information on the page and asks nothing of your brain.

There's a second problem. When you highlight while reading for the first time, you don't yet know what matters. So you either highlight too much (a yellow page tells you nothing) or you highlight what sounds impressive rather than what's examinable.

None of this means you should never touch a highlighter. It means highlighting should come after you understand a section, not during your first read, and it should mark a handful of genuinely tricky things — not every other sentence.

Step 1: Read the specification before you read the chapter

Before you open the textbook, open your exam board's specification for that topic and read the bullet points you're supposed to know. It takes two minutes.

This changes how you read. Instead of wandering through a chapter absorbing whatever the author found interesting, you're hunting for specific answers. Textbooks contain plenty of context, examples and enrichment that will never be examined; the specification tells you what's load-bearing.

It also stops you overrevising. If the spec says "describe the structure of the alveoli" and the textbook spends a page on the history of respiratory medicine, you now know which bit to work on.

Step 2: Turn headings into questions

Before reading a section, convert its heading into a question and write it down.

  • "Enzyme action" becomes How do enzymes speed up reactions, and what affects their rate?
  • "The Treaty of Versailles" becomes What were the terms of the Treaty, and why did Germany object to them?
  • "Differentiation from first principles" becomes How do you derive a derivative from the limit definition, and when do you need to?

Now you're reading to answer something rather than reading to finish. This is a small change that makes a large difference to how much attention you actually pay.

Step 3: Read one section, then close the book

This is the part most students skip, and it's the part that does the work.

Read a single section — not a whole chapter — then close the book and write down everything you can remember. No peeking. Bullet points are fine; scruffy is fine. Some people call this blurting.

It will feel uncomfortable and you will get things wrong. Both of those are signs it's working. The struggle to retrieve is what builds the memory, and the gaps show you exactly where to look when you reopen the book.

Then open the textbook and check. Correct your version in a different colour so the corrections stand out when you come back to it.

Step 4: Make the notes shorter than the textbook

If your notes are as long as the chapter, you've copied, not processed. Aim to compress: one A4 side per section, maximum.

Some ways to compress that actually help:

  • Diagram it. Redraw a process as a flowchart or labelled sketch. Combining words with visuals gives you two routes back to the same information.
  • Table it. Anything with categories — causes and consequences, similarities and differences, advantages and disadvantages — belongs in a table, not a paragraph.
  • Write the definition in your own words. If you can't, you don't understand it yet, and copying the textbook's wording will hide that from you until the exam.

A note on subject differences

The method flexes by subject. In sciences, work through the worked examples with the solution covered before you read it. In maths, the textbook exercises are the revision — reading maths doesn't work. In humanities, focus on collecting specific evidence (dates, names, statistics, quotations) that you can deploy in an essay, because vague answers are what caps marks in the top bands.

Step 5: Go back before you've forgotten it — then again later

One pass through a chapter is not revision, however active it was. Space your returns out: revisit the same section after a day or two, then a week, then a few weeks.

You don't need to re-read the chapter each time. Use the questions you wrote in Step 2, try to answer them from memory, and only open the textbook for the ones you got wrong or hedged on. Ten minutes of that beats an hour of re-reading.

Step 6: Finish with a past-paper question

Textbook knowledge and exam performance are not the same skill. Once you've worked through a topic, find a past-paper question on it and answer it under something close to exam conditions, then mark it against the mark scheme.

This is the reality check. It shows you whether you can retrieve the content under pressure, in the phrasing the exam board uses, in the time available. Very often you'll find you know the content but lose marks on the command word, the number of points required, or the working you didn't show.

Frequently asked questions

Should I make notes from the textbook or use my class notes?
Use your class notes as the backbone and the textbook to fill gaps, check anything you're unsure about, and get extra examples. Rewriting the whole textbook is a poor use of time.

Is it worth buying the revision guide as well as the textbook?
Sometimes. A good revision guide is a condensed, specification-shaped version of the textbook, which saves you the compression work. But the compression work is itself useful revision — so if you're short of money, the textbook plus the spec will do the job.

How long should I spend on one section?
Around 25–40 minutes, including the recall and the check. If you've been on the same section for two hours, you're probably re-reading rather than testing yourself.

What if the textbook doesn't match my exam board?
Cross-check against the specification and be careful with anything not listed there. Content is broadly similar across boards, but required practicals, set texts and case studies often differ — and that's exactly where the marks are.

Can I just read the textbook the night before?
You can, and it's better than nothing, but expect recognition rather than recall — you'll read a question and think "I've seen this" without being able to produce the answer. That gap is the whole argument for starting earlier.
